Ask Randy, the Sports
Psychologist* Dear Randy, I'm a golfer and sometimes when no one is looking, I move my ball. Like if
I'm in the woods, I might kick my ball out or if I'm under a tree, I'll give
myself a better shot. Does this make me some type of sociopath? Dear Bart, Don't be so hard on yourself. In my book, you get kudos just for attempting
to play such a dull, monotonous game such as golf. Besides do you know someone
in this country that doesn't cheat? There's a technique I picked up in graduate
school called "rationalization." It is a very effective tool to use in
self-analysis. It sort of goes like this. You take people like Martha Stewart or
that guy from Enron or that bald guy from Tyco, Kozlowski and you say to
yourself, "look at all these rich greedy bastards stealing millions off the rest
of us." You follow that line of thinking with, "so who am I hurting by moving a
little golf ball a few inches?" Feel better now? You see? It works great. And
the beautiful thing is, you can use this technique in all aspects of your life.
Like, "what's the big deal with playing solitaire all day at work?" or "do you
think Uncle Sam is going to get hurt if I deduct a $5,000 phony donation to a
leper colony in New Guinea?" Good luck!
