Take Away the Automatic Bid by Anita Seervold

Alright, we're all watching the NCAA tournament.  One thing I don't understand - why allow teams in to the tournament that no one wants to win.  Wouldn't you feel cheated if Oakland won it all this year?  If this tournament is to determine the best in college basketball, only let the best compete.  Even upsets get corrected.  Vermont beats Syracuse, then bows out to MSU.  We were cheated out of MSU vs. Syracuse.

Yet everyone loves the excitement of a potential upset, blah, blah, blah.  Here's what I propose:  Take the top 31 teams in the country and put them into the tournament.  Then take all the conference winners who aren't in the top 3, and round out with other good teams for a lesser field of 32.  Then let them play a mini conference with the winner allowed to play with the big time teams.

Think about it - the 32nd best team earns the right to go, conference winner or not.  The lesser teams have a pretty equal shout of getting that #32 position.  Plus, we get another tournament to enjoy.

The 32nd best team would be the equivalent of an 8 seed.  No 8 seed has ever won the tournament.  So no one is really losing out and our time isn't being wasted in the first weekend.  Every game means something.

You won't listen to me.  You men are all just like my husband.
