Helmsley's Poodles Running Iditarod

NOME, AK - A dogsled, led by team of crackerjack French poodles owned by Leona Helmsley, challenged for the prized Iditarod. Sled driver, Max Smegley, explained that these were no ordinary French poodles. "Sure they were clipped and pampered pooches but I used a series of very simple commands to motivate them," Smegley commented.

The appearance of the poodle team drew chuckles at the starting line but no one was laughing as they pulled within ten yards of the winning sled with a quarter mile left in the race. Smegley said he used very simple dog psychology on the team to coax this impressive performance from the canines. "I told them, you wanna go back to living in New York with Leona? That seemed to do the trick."

Smegley feels he committed a strategic error on the last day when he let the dogs eat caviar and liver pate during their last break. "They filled up, got a little lethargic, but all in all, we satisfied with second place."
