20 Questions with a Top High School Athlete

Rashin Muhammad is one of the nation's top High School athletes, excelling in both football and basketball.  JockWeb had the opportunity to sit with this young man in his home.  We had the opportunity to ask about growing up in a gang infested neighborhood as well as his current status and future plans.

Q. First of all, thank you for taking time from your busy schedule to speak with us. Tell me, what's it like growing up in Oakland?
A. Oh, my god, it's so nice!  People are like totally friendly and there's always something fun to do.

Q. This is a tough neighborhood.  Any problems with gangs?
A.  No problems.  In fact my mom drove the gang to the mall the other day and it was such a blast.

Q. Your mother is involved in gang related activity?
A. No, silly.  The gang - you know, my younger brother Petey, my best friend Chaz and his brother Mikey.

Q. How are you doing in school?  Will you be able to play division 1 sports?
A. I've gotten straight A's since elementary school.  AND I got a 1490 on my SAT.  Big time college, here I come!

Q. What colleges are you considering?
A. Oh, I'm definitely staying on the coast.  I'm a beach gal.  So Cal or UCLA for me.  Maybe Stanford.

Q.  I beg your pardon, did you say you were a beach 'gal'?
A.  No.

Q.  I'm pretty sure you did.  What do you mean 'beach gal'?
A.  I did not say that!

Q.  Yes you did!  See, it's in my notes...
A.  Can we just move on?

Q. I'm asking the questions here.  So which sport are you more interested in playing - football or basketball?
A.  Well, I totally like football, but Joe is my first love.

Q.  Who is Joe?
A.  I don't know.  Who is Joe?

Q.  You said 'Joe' is your first love.  Who is Joe?
A.  I didn't say 'Joe', I said basketball.

Q.  I distinctly heard you say 'Joe'.
A.  Why would I say that?  I said 'Basketball'.

Q.  No you didn't!
A.  Yes I did!

Q.  Who's Joe?
A.  I don't know any Joe!  (tears)

Q.  Stop being a baby and answer me!
A.  I don't know...(sobbing)

Q.  So will you play both football and basketball in college?
A.  I'd totally like to, but I think I'd be better if I just concentrated on Joe.

Q.  You did it again!!!
A.  Did what?

Q.  You said 'Joe'.  Who's Joe?
A.  Maybe you are just misunderstanding me.  I said 'basketball'.

Q.  I give up.  If you aren't going to be straight with me, I have to go.
A.  Joe...
