SKIER LOSES CONTACT LENS THEN WORLD CUP Swiss skier Hans Flammer, the heavy favorite to win the European Ski Challenge, finished dead last after spending one hour looking for a lost contact lens. He was heading for a world record in the slalom, when his left lens popped out. After the race Flammer explained, "It took me three weeks to get an appointment with the optometrist and then when I get there, I wait and wait and wait, and finally I get the contact lens." Flammer did not want to face the prospect of a return appointment with his optometrist so he took his good old time looking for the lost lens. First place went to Ugo Miwei of Sweden. Miwei expressed his surprise at the unusual turn of events. "Even with him stopping for all that time, I only beat him by three seconds which means either I suck or I'm spending too much time bagging Swedish women," Miwei said with a wink. Flammer will try his luck again this weekend in the Italian Near Sighted
Downhill Championships. "I'll be ready," he said with one eye in focus.
