IOWA DROPS WRESTLING PROGRAM DUE TO GENDER EQUITY The University of Iowa announced that it was dropping it storied wrestling program due to the increasing demands of Title IX. Title IX stipulates that colleges must balance the numbers of male and female athletes within their athletic programs. Iowa had one of the longest running wrestling programs in the country dating back to 1922 and has produced over 50 Olympic medal winners. University President Sheldon Heard explained, "I hate to be the one that has to make this decision but my hands are tied. I do have to say, the decision was easier because of last year's lousy team." The 2004-05 team finished with no victories and the prospects for next season were not much better. Wrestler Larry Lagner said through tears, "This is so unfair I'm going to lock myself in my room and never come out." Other wrestlers have decided to transfer or enter the porn industry.
