Slowdown Andy Reid's Fault Monday March 10, 2008 JACKSONVILLE, FL - "I choked. I don't know what I was thinking," said a despondent Andy Reid at his press conference following the superbowl. "For some reason I though we had plenty of time left." Reid's mistake was baffling. With just under 5 minutes to go, and trailing by 2 scores, Reid told his offense to take their time. Normally, in such a situation, a smart coach would ask his team to step it up a bit. "I guess I fell short of that near genius tag people have been putting on me lately. I could have sworn there were 5 quarters in a football game, though. There's only 4?" McNabb understood. "I wanted to speed things up," McNabb said in a post game interview which aired on Fox." Coach Reid told me to make sure I huddled and ask everyone if they were feeling ok between every play. He also wanted us to use the full 53 second clock. I think he meant 40 second clock. He was a little nervous." On the other sideline, Patriots coach Bill Belichick showed that superbowl experience can really pay off. "I decided to let them slow things down. I figured that with us winning and them running out the clock, that would be good for my team." Reid went so far as to call 2 consecutive kneel down plays - something usually reserved for teams winning so they can run out the clock. "In retrospect, that probably wasn't the best call. But it felt right at the time." Fortunately, Fox announcer Chris Collingsworth knows everything and was able to point out the flaw. Eagles coaches watching The O.C. upstairs switched back over to the game during a commercial in time to warn Reid. McNabb hit Greg Lewis for a touchdown on the next play. "Boy, if we had be doing that (throwing to Greg Lewis in the end zone) all game, we'd have done really well. Don't you think?" Asked Reid. "I am a genius," pointed out Belichick.
