Iris American Becomes Intoxicated During Superbowl
Monday March 10, 2008

BOSTON, MA - Long known for self control and sobriety, Irish Americans are rarely inebriated. But Sean McDonald of Cambridge, MA had other ideas.

"I've had thousands of Irish Americans in this Bar," said Thomas O'Sullivan, owner of O'Sullivan's Irish Pub and Sports Bar in Boston.  "I've never actually seen one intoxicated."

McDonald was out with friends, intending to watch and hopefully celebrate a Patriots victory in a safe, conservative fashion.  But the evening quickly got away from him.

"By halftime, he was on his 3rd beer.  I've NEVER seen and Irishman drink that much."

According to police reports, McDonald finished 4 beers by the end of the game.  That's when things took a turn for the worse.  "He got up to use the restroom," remembers O'Sullivan.  He seemed ok, but after 4 beers, of course I was watching him.  When he got back to the table, he asked for a shot of Jamison.  I was stunned.  I had to look to see if I had any. Irish Bostonians just don't drink whiskey."

Thinks got ugly after the drink.  "Oh, my God," said Tracy Gallagher of Salem. "He came over to talk to me during the presentation of the trophy.  He said hello and asked my name.  He had a smell of alcohol.  I was embarrassed for the both of us."  Gallagher was repulsed.  "He offered to buy me and my friend a drink, but I already had a drink earlier, and being Irish I don't know if I can handle 2 in one night.  He politely told me it was nice to meet me and returned to his friends.  God, it was awful."

On the way back to his friends, disaster struck.  "I didn't see it when it happened," said O'Sullivan.  "But a waitress was standing right behind him."

According to police reports, McDonald tripped over a chair that was already occupied.  He claims that the person sitting in the chair pushed in back in his way without a chance to avoid it.  McDonald's foot caught the leg of the chair and down he went.  Police were called immediately.

"I'm thinking of no longer offering spirited beverages," said a sullen O'Sullivan. "I don't ever want to see that sort of behavior again."

McDonald paid his tab and was attempting to vacate the premises when police arrived.  The name of the individual in the chair is being withheld.
