The
NFL Decides to Ditch the Whole Roman Numeral
Thing Monday March 10, 2008 The NFL league office and the team owners have concluded that it is no longer necessary to number Super Bowls according to Roman Numerals numbering system. In fact, “Americans have been using Arabic Numerals since the days of James Madison, so it makes sense to do this.”, said Paul Tagliabue, NFL commissioner. It does make sense. The Romans haven’t ruled the world in over 1,000 years. Fans appear to be responding positively to the change. Craig Develin, a Buffalo Bills fan, could not remember the numeration of his own team’s Super Bowl visits due to the archaic system claims, “What do Romans know about football? They should stick to pasta fagioli and soccer riots”. The change should benefit the visual impaired as the letters “XXXIX” would not be immediately apparent that it was a number versus a series of letters. Not everyone agreed with the change. Fox News commentator Bill O’Reilly of “The O’Reilly Factor” disagreed with the change, claiming that “such changes only show what this world has come to when we have to be so politically correct that even in our beloved pastime that we ought to use ARABIC numerals instead of ROMAN numerals. I’m going to use Roman numerals, thank you”.

think, get used to it. Super Bowl 39 is on
Tagliabue added that the NFL may need to revisit their policy of numeration sometime after Superbowl 68. "We're afraid a superbowl after that would give the wrong impression."
